Celebrating January Garden Holidays is the perfect way to channel winter anticipation into spring abundance on your organic homestead. While the outdoor beds may be resting under a blanket of frost, this quiet season provides a thrilling opportunity to evaluate past harvests and sketch out blueprints for the upcoming growing season.
True health starts in the soil, and our motto "if nature didn't make it, don't take it" applies directly to how we feed our crops. This month, we focus on scratch-gardening mastery by mapping out companion planting layouts, sorting through organic heirloom seed catalogs, and prepping nutrient-dense compost without synthetic chemicals. Let these winter celebrations inspire you to cultivate a sustainable, chemical-free oasis that will nourish your family all year long.
National Mail Order Gardening Month: This month marks the peak arrival of vibrant spring seed catalogs right to your doorstep, sparking winter inspiration for growers everywhere. It is the perfect time to sit down with a warm beverage, map out your garden layout, and order organic, non-GMO heirloom seeds from trusted nurseries. Planning your mail-order purchases early allows you to secure the best varieties of fruit trees, companion herbs, and open-pollinated vegetables so you can grow a clean, scratch-cooked harvest from the ground up.
Early Spring 2026, I planted 9 Organic Apple Trees among some other types of fruit trees, like plums, pear, persimmon, apricot, fig, kiwi berry and some blueberries on the Storz Homestead. I'm going to have to figure out a plan B as I had fencing around each individual tree but my deer herd on the property are still getting to them. This is the first year that everything has had fruit.
January 28 is Daisy DayEven when the frost is on the ground, January proves that a beautiful, productive homestead is built during the quiet season of preparation. By taking the time this month to appreciate our indoor houseplants, audit our fruit orchards, and swap premium heirloom seeds with our community, we lay the physical groundwork for an abundant spring harvest.
Remember that true health begins with the care we pour into our soil—if nature didn't make it, don't take it! Let these winter gardening traditions inspire you to keep planning cleanly, and carry this creative, earth-friendly energy forward as we look ahead to the exciting planting projects waiting for us in February.
