Fall Season

Fall is my second favorite season, spring being my favorite. It is always such a great relief to have some cooler weather after a hot summer. The beauty of the leaves turning all different colors and falling from the trees is so incredible, and the earth takes delight in having rain again.

Fall is full of fun holidays and get togethers with friends and family as it draws us near to Christmas and the New Year in the winter season!

Fun Facts About Fall

  • The first day of Fall, is known as the "Autumnal Equinox" and is on September 22nd  in 2025. It is a day when night and day are of equal length. Autumn and Fall are both used for this season.
  • The first day of Winter, or the "Winter Solstice", is on December 21st, 2025, and is the shortest day of year, when the Sun reaches its most southern point in the sky at local noon. After this, the days start getting longer. So that means that the last day of Fall 2025 is on December 20th
  • Many animals collect food for winter or migrate to warmer climates during this time for the winter.
  • Daylight Savings Time ends on the first Sunday in November which is November 2, 2025 at 2:00am

Fall Food

If you are growing your own vegetable garden, or trying to eat seasonally from your local farmers markets, many of the great summer produce winds down during fall.  You can plant fall crops as spaces open up in your garden beds and still get healthy food from your garden during this season. I plan my meals around what is ready in the garden every day.

With the weather turning cold, many people including myself, start preparing great healthy soups and stews. Pumpkins are everywhere in the fall, and in many different types of foods and drinks!

Kerry has put together some great information on fall food with some great information and tips:

Fall Gardening

Fall gardening is the best! The hot weather tapers off and you can increase your time working in the garden and knock out a lot of projects that were just too hot to tackle during the summer months.

One of the things that I love best about fall is that the insects go away for the most part.  In Fall 2024, I started my first garden on my property, and I did not see ONE insect all season! I had beautiful lettuces even through the winter as I cover my lettuce tower to protect it from the rain.  I had gorgeous kale and I did not see one aphid.  Right now on my Summer 2025 crops, my kale is done, thanks to the aphids!

The trees that shed their leaves will turn gorgeous colors before they drop to the ground, There will be lots of leaf raking, or mowing/mulching leaves during the fall. It is such a wonderful time of year!

The colors of Fall Trees are gorgeous!

Fall Preparation

There is much preparation that needs to be done in the fall months to prepare for winter.  The colder your area is in winter, the more preparation and time this will take in the fall months.

  • Cars - If you live in a place with a cold and snowy winter, you need to get your car prepared during fall.  Make sure fluid levels are full, put on snow tires as soon as you are allowed by law in snowy areas, get any car maintenance done, put on new windshield wipers for the rain. They have sturdier windshield wipers for areas that get snow. If you live in an area that snows, fall is the time to get your emergency supplies set up in the trunk of your car - this is super important! Extra clothes, blankets, flares, water/food, ice scraper will all be helpful if you get stranded somewhere.
  • Clothes - If you live in a place that has 4 distinct seasons, fall is when you can start to put away your summer clothes and get your warm winter clothes and coats ready for you and your family.  If you have kids, they often need to change sizes of rain boots and clothes every winter, so fall is a great time to prepare everyone's wardrobe for winter. Snow boots, gloves, scarves are all needed if you live in a cold/snowy climate. Many ski towns have local ski swaps that are a great place to get winter clothes and equipment.
  • Garden - Garden tools, garden equipment, mowers, chair cushions all need to be put up or covered to keep safe from the rain / snow before it comes. Hoses need to be drained and put up as well as making sure that outside faucets are insulted. One of the recent garden tips that I've read about has you leave your spent flowers and crops that are in raised beds to allow insects to hibernate in. I will probably trim my beds up somewhat, but leave the roots in the ground as well as some foliage on the plants.
  • House - If you live in a cold climate and have a wood stove or pellet stove for heat, fall is the time to stock up on wood and pellets, as you won't want to run out when it's cold outside. It's also a great idea to stock up your kitchen and pantry with extra food and supplies, so you don't have to go to the grocery store during the rainy stormy weather. Having an extra freezer is a great idea, as is learning how to can and freeze food in the summer months.  Those who grow their own food will be finishing up preserving their crops for their pantry to help get them through the fall and winter months.

Fall Quotes

Autumn - Fall in Love With Fall
  • Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all. ~ Stanley Horowitz
  • If a year was tucked inside of a clock, then autumn would be the magic hour. ~ Victoria Erickson
  • Let the fields and their crops burst out with Joy! Let the trees of the forest sing for joy ~ Psalm 96:12
  • Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall. ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • As long as autumn lasts, I shall not have hands, canvas and colors enough to paint the beautiful things I see. ~ Vincent Van Gogh
  • And all at once, summer collapsed into fall ~ Oscar Wilde

Fall Weather

Depending on where you live, the fall weather steadily gets colder as summer winds down and we get ready for winter.  The kids are back in school, summer vacations are finished, so Fall is a great time to garden and prepare your house, garden, car and clothes for winter. especially if you live in a colder climate.

The rains often start in fall, and the land starts looking gorgeous again as the fields and grasses turn green again. If you live somewhere cold enough for snow, you will probably get the first snow of the year in fall.
