Summer Season

Summer is the Hottest of the Four Seasons! It follows Spring and is before Fall! The kids are out of school and many vacations happen in summer, which means more family time. Hopefully a beach is involved!

The first day of Summer is also known as the Summer Solstice where we enjoy the most sunlight of the year! After this day, the amount of daylight starts to decrease each day.

• The U.S. State of Alaska and other arctic areas experiences 24 hour daylight. This is called the Midnight Sun where the sun never sets.

• Scientifically, humans are happier during the warmer months. Sunlight has been proven to increase your mood.

• Thunderstorms are more frequent in the summer months

• In 1984, U.S. President Ronald Reagan officially declared that the Month of July was National Ice Cream Month.

Summer Foods

Organic Salad!

Summer Foods are my favorite! Gorgeous fruits and vegetables are readily available, especially if you either grow your own Organic crops, or shop local farmers markets or local farms that have farmstands. 

I have found that the quality of the produce in the grocery stores that are close to me, is just not there. Everything seems old before you purchase them, and hearing about chemicals blasting down on produce or APeel put on the skins to extend their life, I'm not willing to take my chances since I'm extremely chemical sensitive.

Chemicals on/in food is not good for anyone! That is what motivated me in December 2021 to finally purchase some land to grow my own food, something that had been a dream of mine for years. (Follow Me on Instagram at the link on the top right, as I build out my 3.7 acre Storz Homestead)

I planted 75 Organic Strawberry plants in Fall 2025 and have been adding strawberries to my salads and meals every day. It is amazing to pick produce and eat it within 30 minutes! I put 2/3 of them in a garden tower, and the rest of them in a 4' x 8' raised bed.  I plan to get more, as I ate them all as they were ripe and didn't have any left to freeze for smoothies.

Summer Gardening

Where I have lived since 1999, the Summers have been too hot to do much gardening. It's all I can do to get everything watered, and pick the ripe vegetables and cut some flowers.  Most of my "maintenance" type tasks are done in the Spring or Fall, when the weather is not too hot.

In Summer, you have to get outside to do any physical labor before it gets too hot.  Due to the noise ordinance of not disturbing your neighbors, I don't start mowing or weed whacking before 8:00am and many days by 9ish, it is too hot already to keep going.  I have 3.7 acres, so progress is slow as I can't be working when it is super hot heat.

By August, I'm so over watering my flowers, crops and trees, that I can't wait for the cooler weather of Fall, when I can spend more time outside working on projects! 

Summer Preparation

• Cars - Just like you need to put anti-freeze in your car before Winter, you can put coolant in your car to get ready for summer.

• Children - These days, many parents are both working, so arranging for Summer Camps or Day Care to send your kids to is essential. The lucky ones, are the teachers that have the same school schedule as their kids, and the parents can be home with the children during the summer. If not, because of the weather, there are many Camps that do some great outdoor activities.

• Clothes - You should have swopped out your Winter clothes for your Summer clothes in Spring, but if you are a procrastinator like me, you'll need to spend some time.  Oftentimes, either you have gained or lost weight and need a different size of clothing, or in the case of your children, they always seem to need a new size from summer to summer, so shopping is in order.

• Garden - Spring and Fall are the best times to plant trees, shrubs and vegetables, so Summer mainly for me ends up being maintaining and watering what I have planted.  Towards the end of Summer, I start planting seeds for my Fall crops.

• House - I found that with the kids out of school for the summer, that there was much more housework to do. They don't have school or homework to keep them busy, so they always wanted to have more friends over during the summer months. 

• Pets and Wildlife - Summer is HOT!! If you have dogs it is best to walk them during the early morning hours or evening.  Checkout the Sniffspot APP where you can rent other people's property by the hour to run your dogs off leash. I'm a host in my town. Many places have pools, ponds, creeks for your pets to enjoy.  Much better than walking them on concrete! I have acreage with lots of wildlife, so I always keep a couple of kiddie swimming pools filled with water to help the wildlife.

Summer Weather 

Hot! Hot! Hot! The places that I have lived since 1999 have summers that are way too hot and not a drop of rain all summer long! I spent 4 years living in Truckee, CA close to Lake Tahoe and they had perfect summers, warm but not too hot. To me, a 4 Season climate with Summers that are not too hot are the best!
