World Obesity Day & Obesity Care Week: Changing the Narrative on Obesity

Every March, the global health community unifies for two of the most significant public health campaigns on the calendar: World Obesity Day and Obesity Care Week. Together, these events shift the focus away from harmful weight stigma and toward evidence-based medical treatment, global policy transformation, and compassionate healthcare solutions. [1]

World Obesity Day (March 4th)

wof

World Obesity Day is observed globally every year on March 4th. Supported by health networks in over 100 countries, it stands as the most prominent international focal point for collective action against the obesity epidemic.

World Obesity Day Founder and History

World Obesity Day was established in 2015 by the World Obesity Federation (WOF). Initially, the event was celebrated on October 11th. However, in 2020, the date was permanently moved to March 4th to better align with global health initiatives, optimize seasonal clinical outreach, and coordinate with regional healthcare frameworks.

World Obesity Day Official Mission Statement

According to the World Obesity Federation, the official mission of World Obesity Day is to:

"Lead and drive global efforts to reduce, prevent and treat obesity."

The overarching objective is to change perspectives, correct long-standing biological misconceptions, and shift the public spotlight from individual blame to the broken systems that shape collective human health.

Obesity Care Week (First Full Week of March)

ocw

Running in tandem with World Obesity Day, Obesity Care Week (OCW) takes place annually during the first full week of March.

Future Calendar Dates (2026–2030)

To help advocates, community organizations, and health providers plan their campaigns in advance, here are the upcoming dates for Obesity Care Week. Note: World Obesity Day always takes place directly during this week on March 4th. [1, 2]

  • 2026: March 2 – March 6
  • 2027: March 1 – March 5
  • 2028: March 6 – March 10

Obesity Care Week - The Founders and Coalition

Obesity Care Week was launched in 2015 by a premier coalition of leading medical, scientific, and patient-advocacy societies. The five founding organizations are:

  1. The Obesity Joint Action Coalition (OAC)
  2. The Obesity Society (TOS)
  3. The STOP Obesity Alliance (George Washington University)
  4. The Obesity Medicine Association (OMA)
  5. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS)

Obesity Care Week - Official Mission Statement

The designated mission of Obesity Care Week is to:

"Advance a science and clinically-based understanding of obesity and ensure widespread access to respectful, comprehensive, and appropriate care." [1]

Obesity Care Week - The Daily Advocacy Tracks

While separate campaigns emphasize early lifestyle choices and prevention, Obesity Care Week focuses entirely on clinical equity and policy action. The organizers divide the week into distinct, thematic focus days to mobilize the public: [1]

  • Weight Bias Day: Confronting social stereotypes, bullying, and systemic weight discrimination in workplaces, social media, and medical offices. [1]
  • Obesity Treatment Day: Educating the public, insurers, and clinical settings on safe, science-backed medical interventions, including metabolic surgery, behavioral therapy, and modern prescription options. [1]
  • Access to Care Day: Organizing coordinated virtual visits with lawmakers and pushing insurance networks to offer affordable, dignified, and comprehensive coverage for medical treatments. [1]

How to Take Action This March

  • Sign the "Commit to Care" Pledge: Visit the official portal to add your name to the global digital pledge committing to treat everyone with dignity, respect, and compassion, free from stigma or bias. [1, 2]
  • Contact Your Representatives: Use the template toolkits provided during Obesity Care Week to urge policymakers to pass health equity laws that dismantle insurance barriers to treatment. [1]
  • Reframe Your Language: Use person-first language (e.g., "a person living with obesity" rather than "an obese person") to help break down counterproductive cultural stigma. [1]
